Playing God
"I said, `You are
"gods"; you are all sons of the Most High.'
Psalms 82:6
"...Why then do you accuse me
of blasphemy because I said, `I am God's Son'?
John 10:36
Jesus, the Christ, certainly uttered many profound words while he walked this earth, but his reiteration of this passage from Psalms was certainly one that I believe to be his "most high"! You've just got to love Jesus! He always said the right thing at exactly the right time- leaving no doubt that he was God's Word in the flesh! Jesus wasn't really interested in defending himself, but was always ready to defend the Truth with Love and Love with Truth. This is why he pulled this particular passage out of his heart like a sword ready for battle with those ignorant and unbelieving Pharisees. With a heart full of divine Love and a mouth full of Truth, his actions and words squelched their false accusations against him. And, in turn, illuminated the highest revelation we are to obtain- the divine purpose for mankind in this world and in this life.
These men, who were full of religious pride, but low on spiritual understanding, were attempting to bring Jesus down from that unthinkable and unrighteous position that HE was the very Son of God. Outrageous! Blasphemer! Stone him! This was not the Son of God before them, no! This was the son of a lowly carpenter who had obviously lost his mind- another religious lunatic. This was a peasant man from the northern region of Galilee who was surely possessed by a demon to speak such profanity in the holy city of Jerusalem. No, they did not see God's Son; they saw a lunatic, a liar and a blasphemer! In their eyes, which were full of contempt and arrogance, they failed to see the anointed Son of God in their presence. And through their ears, which were clogged with fearfulness and a deafening dogma, they failed to hear the powerful words he spoke. And then Jesus REPEATS this most essential truth in the Gospel of Luke.
Luke 6:35
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Even today, do we receive Jesus' greatest revelation of Truth? Surely, all Christians accept what Jesus said about his own identity, BUT do they also accept what he said about those who follow him? Isn't it plainly stated? I believe Jesus had one desire above all others- for us to be like him! He prayed that we would be one with the Father as he is one with the Father. YOU and I and ALL have the potential to be a SON of the Most High! To become God's son means we become the image of the invisible- the image of Love!
Does your church teach that our highest goal and divine purpose in life is to become the sons of God? No, I don't believe too many do, which is why I would have to say that most Christian churches are subversively antichrist in this most crucial aspect of our faith. Our Christ teaches one thing, but it seems the churches that bear his name teach another. Many churches teach us to be "good" people, but not "God" people. There is a difference, which I will explore in this article. The world's first anointed man to overcome this world became God's Love fully expressed in human form; Jesus knew this was the ONLY way to break the cycle of death and save the world.
We claim that the dark ages have long since passed us by, and yet, so much of Christianity is laying dormant to humanity's highest calling and purpose shown to us by Christ himself! Why are we failing to trust God and who God says we are? Are we fearful of who we truly are? Are some too afraid to proclaim what Jesus did because of how they will be judged by the world? If we let God fill us with His love as Jesus did, then will we also be called blasphemers? Lunatics? Does fear then triumph over LOVE, which is the essence of our God? Or are some simply too comfortable with the pleasures of the world?
I, more than ever, believe the time has come for us to WAKE UP! And not only Christians, but for all of those in Christ who have heard the Call in their hearts! Yes, rise up! Look in the mirror of Truth and face your divine self without fear. Don't believe who the world says you are, instead believe who God says you are- His son, and He is your Father! Don't believe me, believe Christ Jesus! And how does one acquire this holiness and become a son of God? Jesus states that we earn this REWARD by just LOVING our enemies. Love is the answer- Divine Love that is! Divine Love comes from God- it is pure, holy and selfless. It is the most powerful force in all of creation!
I am here to now advocate for this profound message of Love that will turn this world upside down. Soul by soul God's Love grows in the world! Each of us is like a living stone radiating the Spirit of God, and placed together we are a Holy Mansion, a Divine City, and yes, even the Kingdom of God! I just don't understand the confusion! Is something unclear about this? Should we doubt Jesus? God? Some may make the claim that this "truth" is too esoteric- hidden and hard to understand. But is it? Master Jesus makes it pretty clear through his teachings and his love. Apostle Paul revealed this wonderful mystery and built a Gospel upon this unmovable foundation- we are born of the Spirit to become the likeness and fullness of God through Christ.
It is my deepest hope in writing this article to stir the collective Soul of humanity to the truth of who we are. My heart's greatest desire is for man's divine nature to come to maturity and bring God's Kingdom to Earth! Brothers and sisters, we do indeed have the same potential as Jesus to become a son of God! More than ever, the time has come to fully embrace this truth buried deep within every soul and make this potentiality a REALITY! So, my humble intent here is to help reveal and explain that we can't help expressing WHO we are. We are God's offspring! For this reason, we attempt to express God's nature in our everyday lives- through our jobs, our actions and our creations.
While we are correct to believe that we are indeed "gods" and sons of the Most High, we have to realize a very crucial component of this truth. We live in a world of duality where we see good and evil, light and darkness. So, in this world, we also perceive that we have a true self and a false self. Let's return to that Psalms passage in context and consider what the LORD God said before and after He called us sons of the Most High.
Psalms 82:5-7
"They know nothing, they understand nothing.
They walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
"I said, `You are "gods"; you are all sons of the Most High.'
But you will die like mere men; you will fall like every other ruler."
We are gods, but we know and understand NOTHING. We are sons of God, but don't KNOW it, and therefore, walk around in this ignorance and deception. In our fallen state of consciousness, we are then more like deaf, dumb and blind gods. To some this may not sound at all like a "god" but what we must realize is that each of us has the divine Seed/Self of God within us, which is Christ- the anointing. We "die like mere men" because we are living (thinking, feeling, acting) by the false self that believes it is flesh. Our true self is spirit and knows God. The flesh is temporary while the spirit is eternal. The flesh is death while the spirit is life- this is what we have to get through our minds/consciousness. In a very real sense, we have to wake up and BE who God says we are- an expression of Divine Love.
Have you ever heard someone say that we should not be "playing God?" This stern warning typically comes from those who believe there are certain and absolute "boundaries" that "man" should not cross. In fact, the genesis of this writing was actually hearing this phrase being used in conversation. The more I thought about it, the more I strongly disagreed. I am convinced that we absolutely should be PLAYING GOD! Moreover, this is exactly what God, our Father, wants us to do too!
Any revelation of truth always encounters naysayers, but I will not be deterred. Clearly, Jesus heard the same sentiment from the Pharisees- that he shouldn't be playing (pretending to be) God. Are we to compare ourselves to Jesus? Yes! Divine Love will make you fearless! Divine Love will make you accept your true identity. Be who God says you are! To most, God is God; and man is man- and there is a great divide between them. God is WAY up there and I am way down here. They believe we are far, far removed from His holiness and power. It is widely accepted that God is the creator, and we are merely the creatures- more akin to an elaborate lab experiment. Some believe we are "things" God created for his amusement. Really? This natural thinking is exactly the problem! Does God find amusement in the evils and sufferings of the world? Certainly not! We are not lab rats, and we are not toys! We are the SONS OF THE MOST HIGH!
In a similar natural delusion, some have been programmed by religious dogma to accept that everything that happens is God's will, so we shouldn't change anything. Others believe there is no God in control of the universe, so change and improvement are up to us. Which is correct? Could it be an amalgamation of both? Could it be that God is working out His will through us and WITH us? Could it be that our desire to play God in this world is coming straight from the Source of all life? Yes, I absolutely believe this.
Interestingly, the short, but powerful phrase, "playing God," can carry a wide variety of meanings. It could mean that we are competing with God in some sort of game- as in playing God in a game of chess (Good luck with that match, my friend!). It could also mean that we are a "player" or one who is trying to deceive God- as in playing God for all He has (This is not a good idea). At some level and at some time, we may do both of these sorts of playing God. Surely, we all wrestle with God and His will throughout our lives. And how many times have our selfish minds tried to "makes deals" with God knowing in our hearts that we were lying to Him? And who amongst us believes we can lie to our very Creator?
So, in many different ways, we are playing God. However, the meaning I am speaking of is more noble. A meaning I believe brings us a little closer to the truth of who we are. What I am saying is that we are pretending, and better yet, practicing to BE like God, who is our Father. Obviously, Jesus perfected this divine art and walked in step with God. By his accomplishment, he has become a Savior for those who will FOLLOW him. Don't you see? We must become what he is- a son of God. Being a father myself, I am reminded of the last words I might say to my child as they leave our home to go into the world-- "Be good-- I love you!" What do you think our Father in heaven says to us before we leave? I tend to believe it something like, "Be God-- I am Love!"
HEY! Children of Heaven! Time for us to wake up and also grow up! More than ever, the moment has come to be who God says we are. Yet, do some suppose that one day we simply wake up with this divine realization? Yesterday, I thought I was a man, but today I am God's son? Is this how Jesus came to his self awareness? If we look honestly at this, we surely see that this is a gradual process that requires some "on the job training" to reach our highest potential. Even now, I believe we play God everyday without even being totally cognizant of it, as I will explore in this writing.
My heartfelt desire in this latest writing is to demonstrate how humanity is already playing God in our everyday lives. In a myriad of different ways, we are continually projecting our divine nature into the material world around us because this is our higher nature beginning to take flight. We are like fledglings in the nest flapping our wings, not yet having realized that we can actually fly! Don't misunderstand me. We are not here to become God, but to express God. Slowly and surely God's nature is purifying, edifying and growing us into the image of God on earth, as God did with Jesus.
Universally, all creation and mankind want to feel good- we want to feel GOD! The trees want to feel the sun, so they turn their leaves towards it. Animals want to feel full of nourishment, so they go in search of food. Man, after being unfulfilled by the world, will seek God to feel loved. Nothing on earth can give man this divine love and the peace it brings. Yes, we desire, seek and find God at our center- in our heart.
Many will hear the Call of the heart and then express this in noble, but still natural, endeavors. What they may not realize is that what they think is simply an earthly calling is really a divine drive preparing them for something much greater! There are many today that find fulfillment in their job by perhaps becoming a physician, a teacher or a carpenter. Yet, when a loving doctor heals the sick or helps life begin in a barren womb, she is playing God. And when a righteous teacher pours herself out each day in the classroom, instructs her students by example and not merely books, she is playing God. And even when a virtuous carpenter works tirelessly to produce the finest craftsmanship for meager compensation, he is also playing God. Our hearts want us to be good- to be God! Many feel this truth in their hearts!
Yes, my dear readers, we play God everyday in many different ways. Perhaps the most profound and enlightening way we do this is through parenting. To be a mother or father is to be a co-creator with God and gain a greater understanding of God's love for us, who is both our Mother and our Father. Personally, my eyes and heart were opened in ways that I could not have imagined. Our children are a blessing because they help to show us who we are- and is it any different for God and His children? Surely, it should be clear to us by now. Do we finally see what the purpose of life in this world is? This world has been created for us to learn about our true self. It is a spiritual playground full of all sorts of obstacles and training equipment for the children of the Most High to simply play God.
