Return to the
God Might? Think Again!
Through my experiences with other Christians, I am finding out that many are ignorant of OR simply deny the SOVEREIGNTY of our God. In one way they can do this is by seeing the word "MIGHT" as it's used describing an action of God and believe that is means "MAYBE." They think, "well, maybe God can or maybe He can't." This thinking is absolutely wrong! The TRUTH is ALL things are possible for God as long as they be truth themselves. God can not lie nor deny Himself which are outside the realm of Truth. In all that is REAL, God is completely in CONTROL, so we should perhaps look more strongly at what God "might" do where it concerns our salvation.
First, it should be pointed out that the word "might" can carry a variety of meanings, but it should be clear that it does NOT mean "maybe" in many instances. It does NOT carry any uncertainty with it at all when speaking of God's purpose or desire. Here is, I believe, the correct meaning from the American Heritage Dictionary for "might" where is concerns our God and his purpose in Jesus Christ.
MIGHT- "Used to express contingency, purpose, or result in clauses introduced by that or so that: expressing ideas so that the average person might understand."
THIS will happen because THAT has happened. This is the correct understanding of "MIGHT" within the harmony of God's purpose and sovereignty. God's purpose can not fail lest He fails at being truly our God. Let's consider many verses that say "MIGHT" in them, but now we should understand that "MIGHT" really means "WILL BE." God has done THIS so now THAT will be as God wills it. Remember, God's will be done on earth as it IS in heaven. Consider this passage:
MT 26:56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled."
These things have taken place SO THAT prophecy WOULD BE fulfilled. It is God's legal contingency and holy promise. Do any true believers suppose that God's prophecies will not be fulfilled or could not be fulfilled? There is absolutely no chance that what God says would not come to be. It should be understood and believed that all that God said would happen WILL happen. It is not even a question of maybe! Consider this verse which is not even speaking of God directly.
MK 3:6 Then the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus.
Here again, "might" means WILL or WOULD and not how they "maybe" could kill him! They had a purpose and were planning how they "might," or WOULD carry it out. But let's return to God's purpose for His Son coming to us and dying for us. What "might" God be doing through His Son, Jesus Christ?
MK 3:14 He appointed twelve--designating them apostles--that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach 15 and to have authority to drive out demons.
They WERE with Him and they DID go out to preach! There was no maybe ever here! God appointed them and THEN they were with Jesus. They were not with Jesus because they thought he was a really cool guy! They didn't choose to follow Jesus, but God chose them.
JN 15:16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.
JN 6:43 "Stop grumbling among yourselves," Jesus answered. 44 "No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.
MT 9:9 As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
Jesus is not SUGGESTING that Matthew follow Him. He is drawing Matthew with such Love Force that Matthew could not have said, "no." Why are many believers so in the dark about God's sovereignty? Jesus didn't suggest that evil spirits leave men's bodies- HE COMMANDED IT! He says, "follow me"and we follow though our path may not always be straight nor forward. Gravity will take the water to the sea though it may run over and around many obstacles on its way home. Can any resists God's powerful love draw and for how long? Who or what is stronger than God and His love for us? Consider something else God MIGHT do.
JN 9:3 "Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God MIGHT be displayed in his life.
Clearly THIS happened so THAT would happen! It is a matter of cause and effect. God DID display His work; did he not? Now, hold on because here comes a powerful statement from God. Are you ready?
JN 17:2 "Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he MIGHT give eternal life to all those you have given him.
Let us build on what we have established. If we apply the rule of purpose and contingency in God's sovereignty, then God WILL give His life to ALL that have been given to Jesus. No one could question that God will do this. ALL that are given to Christ are to receive God's life. The only question is- WHO or what was given to Jesus? Let's dig for the Truth!
MT 11:27 "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
JN 13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;
EPH 1:22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
COL 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
COL 3:11 Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
1 TIM 4:9 This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance 10 (and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe.
Would you believe that this is a short list! I could have provided many more showing that Jesus Christ has been given ALL of creation and ALL of mankind to be Savior of ALL! There is not a question if He will or not! Again, "might" doesn't mean maybe when speaking of God's intentions. Jesus the Christ has been given ALL to restore ALL- no maybes- NO EXCEPTIONS!
ROM 16:25 Now to him who is able to establish you by my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all nations might believe and obey him-- 27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.
Well, if ALL nations WILL one day believe and obey Him, then they must be saved.
EPH 2:6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he MIGHT show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
God IS showing his "incomparable riches of grace!" We are raised up with Christ IN ORDER that this would happen. Again, there is order, purpose and completion in God. There is NO MAYBE with God. His word, or will goes out from Him and it IS FULFILLED! Consider these passages:
1 JN 3:5 But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.
1 JN 4: 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.
JN 3:16 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
That just about sums up my whole point! In this, the most popular Bible verse (especially at NFL games!), we read what God is doing in Jesus Christ- the GLORIOUS PURPOSE of Jesus Christ! He was sent to SAVE THE WORLD! Ask yourself -is Jesus Christ going to "maybe" save the world? Can Christ (God's Son) fail from His appointed purpose? Does God and "maybe" ever belong in the same sentence? We need to trust that our God is God and there is no other! His will and purpose are sovereign meaning that there is nothing that will keep them from happening. To deny that Jesus Christ will save ALL the world, ALL of mankind and ALL the universe is to deny the power and love of He who made them in the beginning! Thus says the LORD to those who do not believe His control of what He has created:
ISA 46:8 "Remember this, fix it in mind, take it to heart, you rebels.
ISA 46:9 Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me.
ISA 46:10 I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.
ISA 46:11 From the east I summon a bird of prey; from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose. What I have said, that will I bring about; what I have planned, that will I do.
ISA 46:12 Listen to me, you stubborn-hearted, you who are far from righteousness.
ISA 46:13 I am bringing my righteousness near, it is not far away; and my salvation will not be delayed. I will grant salvation to Zion, my splendor to Israel.
EPH 3:6 In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets. 6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.
ROM 11:25 I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And so all Israel will be saved as it is written.
1 TIM 2:3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men --the testimony given in its proper time. 7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle--I am telling the truth, I am not lying--and a teacher of the true faith to the Gentiles.
I am also not lying. This is the true Gospel that I will preach. God's purpose, desire and love will NOT FAIL! Praise God the savior of ALL created in His image!
His peace and understanding be with you,
return to the Savior of the World
