I actually heard this song on a Christian radio station many years ago and instantly fell in love with it's message that is full of emotion and based on truth. This song comes off a very solid album called "Out of the Dust" by a group that is no longer together- HUMAN, which is unfortunate because there are few groups that have ever blended such powerful lyrics, music and emotion together like these guys did. "Disguise" is just one of many great songs on this album, so I would highly recommend it.
This particular song begins by saying we must wake up to the truth- "the truth of who I am." Do you know who you truly are?
Ephesians 4:22
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put
off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful
desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and
to put on the new self, created to be like God in true
righteousness and holiness.
Your "new self" is your TRUE self! We are nothing less than the divine offspring of the one true God. In short, we are spirit, not flesh. The flesh that tends to disguise this truth from many is an illusion, a deception. This is why some will certainly say, "No, my body is very real!" It may be real in this world of shadows, but what is it when you are no longer in this world. What is the flesh when there is no physical existence, no time and no space? What is the flesh in God's Kingdom? As Jesus realized and taught, "the flesh means nothing" because "the spirit gives life." Many read these words, but very few take it to heart and embrace the higher reality of our existence. The physical expression that you see in a mirror is not who you are because you are like your Father- unseen spirit. What we must accept is that the physical world including the body is temporary and will most certainly end.
Yet, even though your disguise will come off, your life will not end. In truth, the flesh is merely a manifestation for us to come to realize higher and higher levels of consciousness. The song goes on to say that "if God were a painter; my life canvas white as snow; I'd become His portrait; fit and all the world He'd show." In other words, once we take of the disguise and rid ourselves of the deception saying we are flesh then we can be the image of God. God is not flesh. God is not a man. However, if our lives are lived in the spirit and by doing God's will, we will become God's portrait for all the world to see. This exactly what Jesus did. He made himself nothing (white canvas) so that God could paint (lead him, color him) as God saw fit. When God was done with Jesus, Jesus said, "If you have seen me, you have seen the Father." Thus, the disguise was lost and the portrait was finished. Behold the Son of God!
