"Closer to
Myself"
by Kendall Payne
(click
above link to listen)
Digging deep, I feel my conscience burn
I need to know who and what I am
This hunger jolts me from complacency
Rocks me, makes me meet myself
Jacob walked a limp to remind him
Of the greater gift of the greater one
But when I fell, I fell to my own resources
How can I carry the truth, if I can't even crawl to you?
Chorus:
I wanna feel something sweeter than this sin
Cover me in leaves roll me over again
I've been everybody else now I wanna be
Something closer to myself
Paint me in a different light
Shed me yet another coat of skin
Mark me with ash until I'm clean again
Cause I'm so sick and tired
Of being sick and tired
I know I can love you, I know that I can
Chorus:
I wanna feel something sweeter than this sin
Cover me in leaves roll me over again
I've been everybody else now I wanna be
Something closer to myself
Hello friends,
This song should really ring true in your spirit. I don't really know much about this artist, but I knew instantly that I liked what she was singing about! Her words and emotion were the sounds of Truth ringing- can you hear it? I think the deepest desire for any maturing child of God is wanting to be closer to our self...our TRUE self. This song resonates the fundamental truth that Paul writes about in the third chapter of Collosians. Let's take a look.
Colossians
3:1
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on
things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things
above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with
Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is
your life, appears, then you also will appear with
him in glory.
Colossians
3:5
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature:
sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which
is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the
wrath of God is coming. 7
You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid
yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice,
slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have
taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the
new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its
Creator. 11 Here there is no Greek or
Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or
free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
I don't think there is a more powerful passage in the Bible than this one because it says it all- Christ is ALL. Christ is you. Christ is me. Christ is taking over the universe because Christ created the universe. Christ is the Son of God. Christ is the Word of God. Christ is the life that holds all things together and the purpose for all life. Christ is more than one man, yet Christ was expressed in the man Jesus.
This song from Kendall Payne is right on target! Our conscience burns because our desire is to be closer to who God says we are- our true and new SELF that is the image of God. Christ is our salvation my friends because Christ is our life. To become like Jesus is to be saved and to be our true self, who is the image of God. It is really that simple.
So, are you "sick and tired of being sick and tired" yet?
