"Jesus
Freak"
by dc Talk

[What will people think when they hear that I'm a Jesus Freak? What will people do when they find that's it's true?]
Separated, I cut myself clean
From a past that comes back in my darkest of dreams
Been apprehended by a spiritual force
And a grace that replaced all the me I've divorced
I saw a man with tat on his
big fat belly
It wiggled around like marmalade jelly
It took me a while to catch what it said
Cause I had to match the rhythm
Of his belly with my head
'Jesus Saves' is what it raved in a typical tattoo green
He stood on a box in the middle of the city
And claimed he had a dream
(chorus)
What will people think
When they hear that I'm a Jesus freak
What will people do when they find that it's true
I don't really care if they label me a Jesus freak
There ain't no disguising the truth
Kamikaze, my death is gain
I've been marked by my Maker
A peculiar display
The high and lofty, they see me as weak
Cause I won't live and die for the power they seek
There was a man from the
desert with naps in his head
The sand that he walked was also his bed
The words that he spoke made the people assume
There wasn't too much left in the upper room
With skins on his back and hair on his face
They thought he was strange by the locusts he ate
The Pharisees tripped when they heard him speak
Until the king took the head of this Jesus freak
(repeat chorus 2x)
People say I'm strange, does
it make me a stranger
That my best friend was born in a manger
People say I'm strange, does it make me a stranger
That my best friend was born in a manger
(repeat chorus 2x)
What will people think
[What will people think]
What will people do
[What will people do]
I don't really care
[What else can I say]
There ain't no disguising the truth
[Jesus is the way]
Hello friends,
I know it has been more than a "week" since I posted another one of my favorite songs, but hey, this one is worth waiting for! How can you not love this song? It is the classic Christian rock anthem! The power behind every note and word of this song can really energize the soul. Of course, this song is from dc Talk who is a very talented group of young men. I haven't heard anything new from them lately, but I hope they keep making music like this one. Don't go soft on me boys!
Before I ever heard this song, I told by older brother that I didn't care if people called me a "Jesus Freak" because in a very real sense I was. I loved Jesus and all that he stood for. I believed then and do to this day that he was God's son in the flesh. He was a little worried about me at that time because being a "Jesus Freak" carried a negative connotation in his mind, but not mine. I don't care for labels because like all coverings they really don't reveal what is inside. My beliefs and teachings are much different than most who would be labeled a Jesus Freak. What I tell any who care- I am not religious, but I am spiritual. I don't have live by a doctrine, but I always seek the Truth. But back to the song...
One of my favorite lyrics is- "Separated, I cut myself clean from a past that comes back in my darkest of dreams. Been apprehended by a spiritual force and a grace that replaced all the me I've divorced." Yes, we must all separate our old self from our new (true) self that is made in the image of God. God is not flesh. God is spirit. So the true you is spirit. We must live and love as spirit, not as flesh. Divorce the carnal mind and you take the devil off his throne and give him no voice in your being.
Then we hear that "The high and lofty, they see me as weak cause I won't live and die for the power they seek." My natural father believes that religion is a crutch for those to "weak" to accept life for what it is. He is actually a deep, even spiritual thinker, but the world and particularly religion has turned him off. So much so, that he seems to be throwing out the truth with the bathwater. Nearly every religion has some truth embedded within it somewhere even if it is covered with garbage. Often times, the religious person seeks power in the world....including money, prestige and fame. The spiritual person is much different. They seek peace from God.
The song also makes a reference to John the Baptist. He was quite a guy! He was the first Jesus Freak, but thank God not the last! So, to all of you Jesus Freaks out there follow John's lead. Live for Christ even if it means your death. Testify for Christ even if it seems no one is listening. And always remember that those who love and follow Jesus the Christ are not freaks; they are the children of God.
Jesus wasn't a Christian...he was the Christ. (Translation- Christ is our true life no matter what religion the world has labeled us with)
peace,
brad
