"The Distance"

Let him come into the city
Let him find his lucky penny
Let him put it in his pocket
And shake it all around

I've been to pretty buildings, all in search of you
I have lit all the candles, sat in all the pews
The desert had been done before,
But I didn't even care
I got sand in both my shoes and scorpions in my hair
I saw that...

Oh the distance is not do-able
In these bodies of clay my brother
Oh the distance, it makes me uncomfortable
Guess it's natural to feel this way
Oh, let's hold out for somethin' sweeter
Spread your wings and fly

My car became the church and I
The worshipper of silence there
In a moment peace came over me
And the one who was beatin' my heart appeared and...

Oh the distance is not do-able
In these bodies of clay my brother
Oh the distance, it makes me uncomfortable
Guess it's natural to feel this way
Oh, are we locked into these bodies?
Let's hold out for somethin' sweeter
Spread your wings and fly

Oh, are we locked into these bodies?
Are we anything at all?
Let's hold out for somethin' sweeter
Spread your wings and fly
This distance is dreamin'
We're already there tonight

One of the greatest deceptions facing mankind today is the belief that he is flesh. Every spiritual student should know that "flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God" yet many continue to cling to "it" for their life. They live for it, by it and through it. What this song from Live helps to show is that we are much more than a body of flesh. In fact, we hear that "the distance is not do-able in these bodies of flesh my brother." The spiritually minded ones also know that God isn't living in "pretty buildings" with candles and pews. This spiritually enlightening song is representative of what you will find on "The Distance to Here," which is by far their best album to date. Jesus said he was from not of this world, but from above. Jesus realized that he was spirit and not flesh. He left this lower world in the flesh to return home to his Father in the spirit.

JOHN 14:1
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going."
JOHN 14:5
Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?"
JOHN 14:6
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him."

The "way" to be with Jesus is to be Christ-conscious, which is in the spirit of sonship with God. This is a state of spiritual maturation when we come to accept that we are God's children; we are spirit. I think many spiritual souls become discouraged because that "distance" to where Jesus is seems so far. In other words, reaching that oneness with God that Jesus experienced does not seem possible, but it is! Yet, what we must first come to understand is that we can never become Christ-conscious by living through the flesh.

ROMANS 7:4
So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.
5 For when we were controlled by the sinful nature,n the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death. 6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

We must live through our spirit because we are spirit. And our Father is spirit. How do we realize this? We make our minds still, quiet and become a "worshipper of silence" in the Most Holy Place. There within our spirit is the One who is "beatin' my heart." Our hearts pump life through our bodies, but God is the One who pumps life and will into everything. God is our true and higher life. God is in the Kingdom of Heaven, which is within us and within our very spirit. It is through our spirit that we are eternally and continually connected with God. We can never separate from God except in our minds, our consciousness. So this is how we must reconnect with God- by raising our consciousness (awareness) of Him and His will in our lives.

Yes, the distance to heaven may seem beyond our reach at the moment, but that distance isn't real. Time and space will be exposed and then disposed of like a dream. Slowly and surely, our spirits grow stronger and our minds are raised out of this world. Then your spirit will be able to "spread your wings and fly." When the time is right, God will awaken each one of His children back into the reality of His love and peace.
